The Livability Economy: People, Places and Prosperity

Livable Communities provide a host of advantages that enhance the quality of life of residents, the economic prospects of businesses and the bottom line of local governments. The Livability Economy shows how livability ini-tiatives contribute to improved economic performance and a more vibrant, desirable and competitive environment for housing and commercial invest-ment. This workshop focuses on design factors that feature livability out-comes that benefit older adults and people of all ages. Mr. Armbruster will describe some of the most common tools and treatments for creating age-friendly environments -- from the least-expensive, short-term wins to dra-matic changes and long-term initiatives. All of the proposed transfor-mations are expected to create a return on investment by increasing busi-ness income, property values and new development; decreasing vehicle crashes, pedestrian injuries and fatalities; reducing medical costs; and im-proving air quality and overall public health. In addition, AARP's new tool, the "Livability Index" will be presented which measures the quality of life in American communities across multiple dimensions: housing, transporta-tion, neighborhood characteristics, environment, health, opportunity, and civic and social engagement.
