Randolph Historical Society to Host Civil War Mapmaker
Well-known cartographer and historian Earl B. McElfresh will be the featured
guest speaker at a special program hosted by the Randolph Historical Society
at 7pm in the Community Room at the Randolph municipal building.
The celebrated Civil War mapmaker will present a program "The Confederacy
Should Never Have Lost The Civil War," based on his thesis arrived from his
years of map research.
According to McElfresh, the Rebel leadership was a textbook case of arrested
development: "A bunch of slave holding aristocrats who had never been
challenged by anybody about anything, who had always gotten their own way,
whose every whim was ironclad and were to a man, bullies, cads and blowhards.
Suddenly they're confronting men like Lincoln, Grant, Sherman, Stanton,
Butler and Thomas. It was the first time men like Jefferson Davis had ever
been challenged. In his early messages to the Confederate Congress, Davis is
annoyed and taken aback that Lincoln is going to contest secession."
McElfresh is owner and cartographer for McElfresh Map Company, which has been
producing detailed maps of historical events since 1993. He has done
extensive research on the Civil War for his map company, as well as for books
and articles he has published. His maps are known for their accuracy,
comprehensiveness and artistry, and are designed to be an authentic
topographical portrayal of historical events.
