2011 WNY Field Crops Update
Join the Cornell University Cooperative Extension Associations of Allegany/Cattaraugus, and Chautauqua Counties for a 2011 Field Crop Update Meeting. The course will be offered at the Randolph Fire Hall; Main Street; Randolph, NY on Friday, April 8, 2011 from 10 AM to 3 PM.
Corn Management for Silage and Grain

Bill will talk about variety selection (including GMO traits), planting times and seeding rates for corn as well other agronomic practices to promote healthy productive crops.
Grass as a Bio-Energy Crop
Jerry Cherney, Cornell University, Department of Crops & Soil Science
Jerry will talk about growing, harvesting and utilizing various grasses for biofuel production.
Corn Disease Management - Where Do Fungicides Fit?
Gary Bergstrom Cornell University, Department of Plant Pathology
Fungal leaf blights (e.g., anthracnose, eyespot, gray leaf spot, and northern leaf blight) can significantly reduce corn grain and silage yields when blight is severe in the upper leaf canopy during the primary grain filling period in August. Traditional and continuing methods of control include; selection of disease resistant hybrids, rotation with non-susceptible crops, and deep-tillage of corn residues to limit spore inoculum. Bergstrom will discuss what is known and not yet known about the utility, and fit of foliar fungicides as the newest tools available for integrated management of corn diseases.
Herbicide Update
Russ Hahn, Cornell University, Department of Crops & Soil Science
Russ will introduce the newly registered products, Sharpen and Verdict, for use in corn and soybeans, and OpTill for soybeans only. These products contain Kixor, a new active ingredient with burndown and residual activity on broadleaf weeds. In addition, he will do an update on herbicide resistant weeds, especially glyphosate resistant weeds, along with management strategies for growers and industry efforts to help with resistance management.
Tools for Small Farm Nutrient Management
Quirine Ketterings, Cornell University, Department of Animal Science
Quirine will talk about research and tools available for small farms to manage manure and soil health.
